SIP Trunks (Session Initiation Protocol)

SIP - Session Initiation Protocol

SIP is a form of Voice over IP connection which many businesses are utilising to lower their communications costs.
SIP Trunks will dramatically reduce calling costs by routing calls over an IP network instead of the traditional public telephone network which uses analogue or ISDN lines.
So what are the benefits of having SIP Trunking?
Probably the most important selling factor is cost. SIP enables free calls between sites and lower cost calls overall compared with traditional telephony.
It is much cheaper than traditional ISDN services, you can scale on a per channel basis rather than in pairs and it can be provisioned in a matter of minutes.
Most new phone systems support SIP, but even if you are using an older model you can still use a VoIP Gateway to enable a SIP connection between your old phone system and your internet connection.
Number provisioning and porting can be easily supplied via SIP, making life as easy as possible.
And finally, you can receive disaster recovery support by having a combination of ISDN and SIP exchange lines, so that you can switch between the two as required during line failures.
Alternatively, two broadband connections can be installed and if there is an issue with one connection, the back-up link will automatically take over.

SIP Trunking - Features & Benefits

1. Number Porting

This enables the customer to port their numbers away from BT and other telephony operators. There are a number of different scenarios when this will be applicable:
• A company moving out of the exchange area. Even if they install a new ISDN connection, it’s a cost effective and practical way to retain the numbers.
• A company which is closing down offices and wants to retain the local numbers for a local presence.
The numbers can be delivered anywhere in the world where there is an internet connection.

2. Number Provisioning

Main-Tel has its own number ranges provided by Ofcom, providing numbers anywhere in the UK, along with most countries throughout the world.
A company can be based in Birmingham and be provided with a telephone number in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Paris.
This proves fantastic for marketing; providing a local presence and a cost-effective option to explore potential markets in other countries.

3. Any owned number display

Customers are not confined to having telephone numbers within the telephone exchange area. They can send out any number they use as the CLI:
•         ISDN DDI ranges
•         0844, 0845, 0870
•         Any UK or international numbers provided by Main-Tel
This has a massive impact on the ability to market a company and its services, showing a local presence from anywhere in the world.

4. Disaster Recovery

Customers can have ISDN and SIP exchange lines, switching between the two as required during line failures. They can have:
•         A mix of ISDN and SIP connections. Both inbound and outbound can be re-routed via either SIP or ISDN.
•         Install two broadband connections (One for voice, the other for data or both for voice and data). If there is an issue with one connection the backup link automatically takes over.
•         A customer with two offices can have the same SIP trunk licenses installed in both locations. If there is an issue at either site, the connected site would receive all calls.

5. Cost Savings

·          Line rental charges are vastly reduced as multiple SIP connections can take place over a single line.
·          Call costs are lower and free for on-net calls between SIP users.
·          Hardware requirements are reduced for new installations as a single network is used for both voice and data.
