Local businessman unveils proposal for a championship golf course at Yarm
Thu, 23 Aug 2007
Proposals to convert land surrounding the popular golf driving range at Kirklevington, Yarm into a golf course, that will provide first-class facilities for families and businesses as well as a championship-standard test of golfing skills, will shortly be unveiled for public consultation by a local businessman.
Tom Howson is best known in the Tees Valley as head of Main-Tel (NE) Limited, the company he established in 1983 to supply and install telephone systems. Based at Thornaby – on –Tees, Main-Tel has grown into a leading national supplier of business communication systems, with offices in Northern Ireland and the South of England.
Fiercely proud of his local roots, Tom’s aim is to create a facility that will raise the Tees Valley’s profile in international golfing circles, while creating a sustainable business catering for all the family, including the golfing champions of the future.
To ensure the course takes its place among the North East’s handful of world-class golfing experiences, Tom proposes to engage the acclaimed international golf course architect, Jonathan Gaunt, to design the course – which will be matched by a new, five star club house and a golfing academy area.
All woodland areas within the 150 acre site will be preserved and, where possible and practical, enhanced by an extensive programme of planting, carefully planned to maintain and improve the existing wildlife habitats.
The welfare of the communities surrounding the course is also a key priority and local people will be given every opportunity to have their say as the initial proposals are developed into a formal planning application.
This public consultation process commences on Thursday 13 September (4.00pm – 8.00pm) with an open day at the Driving Range. Tom Howson, his project manager, Fred Bynoe, and the entire project team will be present to answer questions in detail.
